And there's something about going. I would recommend it, if you have to go, just for your own sanity. But if you don't have to, go. I hope it inspires you to go, and be a part of something bigger. About three weeks ago, I got a Facebook friend request. It said: "My best friend in the army. We are going to a bar in downtown Houston." And I thought: "That is a lovely place to be, and you should go." This is a place where all sorts of nice people meet. So, I did. And here's what I found: This place is a dive, which I expected. It's a dive. I mean, sure, it's a place with a basement, a few bathrooms, and a sign that says, "No Smoking." It has some sort of bar atmosphere that I am not familiar with, and I thought: Well, I can get a little tipsy there, and this place might not be as bad as I thought. But then I realized: The bar, the bar is a dive. It's really a dive.

A few minutes into my evening, the bartender brought out a tall cup of coffee and we both downed our cups in a quick two minutes. I think I may have felt kind of weird drinking coffee with my feet up on the bar. But it was nice, it was my place to be. But I still felt sort of awkward. I'm really a good conversationalist, but it was all so awkward. After the first couple drinks, my bartender said, "This is how it's supposed to go. The only other drink I can serve you is this one." "No, I don't want that," I said, "I want this one." "Of course you want this one." I'm not going to lie to you and say I wasn't pretty happy when he gave it to me, or that I was excited to be able to have a drink at a bar and feel like it was my place. But I really was more confused than excited. I don't know what it is about this drinking game that gets me to like it so much. My bartenders seem to get it. Maybe I'm more comfortable in the navy than other people, or maybe my bartenders have a certain way of talking about women that makes them more comfortable when dealing with sailors. Maybe I'm just really into sailors and the drinking games they play, and maybe when I'm in the navy and have to get into my man I just want to be able to just go ahead and let him drink whatever he wants. But my bartender knew I was a girl and tried her best to help me out, and she did.
