"The Department of Defense also has specific regulations prohibiting servicemembers from having sexual contact with one another."

According to the military's Uniform Code of Military Justice, "If a military member marries a civilian, and the spouses are separated or divorced within six months of the marriage, the officer commanding the member's unit is not required to accept the marriage.

"A servicemember who is not permitted to have sexual contact with his or her spouse as a result of military service may marry someone of the opposite sex, even though such a marriage would not be recognized by the Armed Forces."

For soldiers who are married, "it's a matter of trust and respect." The military's regulations don't allow for sexual contact with a civilian before the military spouse's marriage to be dissolved because the separation or divorce of the spouses "could have severe consequences." However, "the military does allow a couple who married to have sexual relations with each other." If this happens, "the commander of the unit may require that the couple leave the unit or be discharged for any act of sexual misconduct.

"The rules are strict," Brown said. "The military has been very clear in this respect. In general, there are a lot of things you can do with people outside of the military that would violate the chain of command."

He added, "My wife is in uniform, and I am not. But that doesn't mean I can't be married to her. If we have sex, that's fine."

They've been married for 10 years.

"That's all I have to say, that I think the military has a different set of rules than everyone else," he said. "It's very difficult to break into the system in a very short time."
