I was on the receiving end of quite a few of these. It was quite embarrassing. I mean, they were in military uniform. How could they be so immature and not know that their uniform was a piece of crap?

I had a friend in high school who was a member of the military, and when he was asked to go on dates, he refused. He said that the service culture was too hard and they weren't prepared for life on the road. He made it sound like they didn't think he would want to be with them.

I was actually surprised at this reaction because I always thought being a soldier was more about strength than toughness. For some of the people I've met, it was a big advantage to be a soldier. For others, they were afraid of the military and had no interest in serving. I saw them as victims of their culture. They wanted to feel strong and powerful, but couldn't get out of the box they were stuck in. When they had the courage to leave their culture and see things differently, it was an enormous change. For others, they just didn't care anymore. As much as I hated to say this, I'm really proud of them. They have made some real differences in the world, which is more than I could have ever hoped for.
