"The best thing to do in college is to date someone from the military. That's what I did. I was in the Army for two and a half years, which is longer than my junior year of high school. And I had the chance to meet a lot of really awesome people in the Army. That was a very awesome experience. There were so many guys in my platoon that I got to know, and it taught me how to handle myself as a friend. It was a great experience." —Kyle "Woo" Gassman, 28, a Marine Corps Corps Infantry Officer

"I actually met the person I'm married to. He's from the Army, and we've been dating for five years. We were dating, and prison pen pals georgia I was a soldier, and he's an infantryman. I've known him since we were a kid, and he's so nice. We went to the same classes, and he just made me feel so welcome. He's the person I would go for a beer with. I think he's a really cool guy. We were just talking about the military, and he said he was from the Marines, and I was like, 'Oh, I've got a military boyfriend, and I just felt it was the right thing to say. He's a really cool guy, and I'm excited to be with him."

When you're dating a guy who's military, it's easier to get along with them. It helps that military folks are generally a lot more laid-back than civilians, and will probably enjoy having you around. And there are plenty of guys who are interested in serving, and a lot of those are military.

"I just know people who have gone through the same things as me," says Matthew, who is 28 and a private first class. "So I kind of feel like chatroom irani I have that support system. It's not so much that I have a military buddy, because most of the guys I know in the military, they don't date girls from the military."

But there is some overlap in the military and civilian worlds, and tattooed guys Matthew and his partner have a good relationship. "I'm really lucky that we share the same interests, and that's something I really appreciate," he says. "I think we make a good team."

It can be easy to get stuck in the civilian world, where you can't get married unless you're a parent, but Matthew says he's met a lot of military thailand cupid dating people through work or school. He met his now-wife, Jennifer, through work, and their two children live with Matthew in an apartment they share. "I kind of feel like I'm in that position as well," he says. "It doesn't bother me because I'm like 'Oh, that's my job.'"

As military dating goes, it's a little more relaxed than that. Dating in the military is not a dating experience as much as it's a chance for the men and women to interact. That's why, for instance, Matthew is dating a military woman who is also an aviation mechanic. "It's just nice to know that everyone is trying to get to know you and be interested in you," he says.

And Matthew has found that everyone is interested in him. "I've had women say to me, 'I've been reading about your blog and watching your videos and I want to tell me more about you.' I've gotten to meet people I never even expected to meet."

That's not to say, though, that they're all going to end up on a date. Even with his military partner, Matthew's military dating experience was brief. "I'm sure I've had a few girlfriends," he says, "but I'm not looking for any more."

What's in a military couple?

Matthew is one of many who have met men through the military and are now married. As it turns out, that's not such a surprising fact. A military spouse and their military husband or husband are, by and large, the same as any civilian couple, according to a 2010 survey. About half of those surveyed (52%) had had a military spouse, compared to only 9% of the general population. (The other half were "other.") About 8% were married to someone in the military, which isn't all that surprising since the military is not typically the "dating" community, though the military is a popular place to do business and enjoy the occasional weekend getaway.

But what's surprising is that there are some striking similarities between military and civilian relationships. For instance, military wives, unlike civilians, are expected to be supportive and committed to the men they marry. Military couples tend to have more traditional values than the general population, which is no surprise, given the emphasis the military places on military service. Military spouses also tend to be more religious and less interested in the "adult" world than civilians, a tendency we see most clearly in the case of our military spouses. And finally, military couples tend to be less dependent on each other than their civilian counterparts. (For more on these things, see having a boyfriend in the army "The Military Wives of the Future: Is Your Marriage Fulfilling?" ) As an aside, I found this quote from my friend "Sissy" on reddit: I'm in my 30s, divorced, and married to an officer. We get along great, work really well together, and I can't say enough good things about him. He loves our daughter as much as I do, and treats her like a princess. He does everything right and does a fantastic job, and I think it is due to that that he is able to get married and have a family without a lot of stress. I wish I american single girls had someone like him to talk to about single chat online this stuff, because it is stressful to talk about being in the military with your kids! My other friend is in the same boat and he has the same thoughts and comments. My wife and I are currently engaged. We have worked together so much since we married.
